Autonomous networks are a strategic imperative, say analysts

For many years the telecoms industry struggled to realize its ambition of putting in place autonomous networks. Now, however, analysts believe recent examples of implementations show significant progress by the industry - both in understanding what autonomous networks mean in practice and how to achieve them.

The telecoms research company, Appledore, believes that autonomous networks offer a clear and compelling destination for the telecom industry, and that the work led by TM Forum and Huawei is an important enabler of industry change. In a new research note, Appledore looks at the progress towards autonomous networks, as evidenced by real world examples of key concepts and best practice being applied.

Many individual technologies from outside and inside the telecom industry have contributed to this progress. But advancing the industry as a whole with such a fundamental idea takes concerted, coordinated collaboration over a sustained period between players with a common vision.

In recent years, the TM Forum and member companies, together with Huawei and some of its customers, have been progressively refining the industry roadmap for autonomous networks – learning lessons and sharing results from practical implementations. Find out more about TM Forum's members' work in the fourth annual release of our Autonomous Networks paper.
