Sustainability is a strategic priority for both communications service providers (CSPs) and vendors. Reducing energy usage whilst accommodating a rising tide of data consumption is a challenge requiring implementation of more sustainable technologies, using innovative solutions and practices to minimize environmental impact, promote social responsibility, and contribute to long-term economic viability.
At the same time, CSPs have an opportunity to leverage cloud-native capabilities, analytics, and automation to transform their operational processes, create new solutions and enhance customer experience. Vendors can help CSPs improve sustainability, efficiency, and innovation by offering a fresh approach to architecture and systems. Optimizing efficiency translates cost saving to power and carbon footprint reduction, not only making profitability sustainable but making sustainability profitable.
Building cloud-native, modular architectures for scalability and agility
To provide sustainable solutions vendors need to offer products that utilize network and systems resources more efficiently and deliver real-time responsiveness to network traffic and data processing demands, so that CSPs can conserve energy consumption, without undermining quality of experience for their customers.
To do this, solutions must be more intelligent and dynamically adaptive, making it essential to transition to scalable, modular architectures. These allow CSPs to reuse applications across its business in a more holistic fashion. Previously, CSPs have tended to develop single, monolithic applications, which are less operationally efficient. An integrated, modular architecture ensures greater flexibility and scalability and enables CSPs to use their infrastructure for longer periods.
It is critical to integrate sustainability into architecture and operations as a facet of efficiency. Building architecture as cloud-native platforms, combined with enhanced use of analytics and network and service automation, provides CSPs with demand-based insights and the flexibility to dynamically scale resource utilization. This ensures energy efficiency by minimizing power consumption and operational costs and empowers CSPs to operate according to green principles whilst handling increasing demands on their networks.
Accelerating digital transformation to drive innovation and energy efficiency
Accelerating digitization of CSPs is another means of reducing energy consumption. Digitization is the transformation of a business around data-led operational and commercial processes, which creates a range of efficiencies—of time, workloads, cost, and possibly material usage or physical space—and so is a major opportunity to reduce energy requirements.
Vendors can support CSPs both internally, to help optimize their own operations, and externally, to help create greater efficiency in CSP’s management of their customer relationships. If vendors understand CSP roadmaps and plan ahead whilst developing new products, they can deliver future-proofed digital solutions that fit CSP needs. This will also reduce the need for physical travel between vendor and CSP locations—a net reduction in carbon footprint.
Digital transformation could include adoption of CX technologies which enable the transition to paperless digital solutions, reducing the environmental impact associated with traditional processes, or virtual communication tools and remote support technologies, which reduce the need for physical travel, contributing to lower carbon emissions.
The digitization roadmap can be extended further, by adoption of cloud-based CX technologies, enabling energy-efficient contact centers with optimized server usage, reducing energy consumption associated with on-premises infrastructure, and through use of personalized CX experiences powered by analytics and AI, which reduce waste by tailoring product recommendations.
Given the increased data demand and value chain complexity experienced by CSPs, reducing their carbon footprint is challenging. It is essential that vendors understand the current needs of their CSP customers and can develop solutions to fit future needs, with even greater flexibility and efficiency. For CSPs, working with adaptable vendors to deploy more intelligent, scalable architectures, and drive digital transformation of their internal and customer-focused operations, they will be able to deliver more innovative services, and be more efficient and sustainable.
Sustainability impacts everyone. For CSPs, integrating sustainability into technologies and processes is not optional—it is a critical necessity in creating a healthier, brighter future for the planet.
