Building a step-by-step approach to monetizing APIs

Many telecoms operators aspire to build vertical ecosystems as a means of creating new lines of business. Indeed, the creation of such ecosystems will be essential for the monetisation of 5G networks in the B2B and B2B2C markets. But how do you, as a telecoms operator, build new ecosystems from scratch in such a way as to leverage your key assets and capabilities?

The key to building ecosystems is APIs. Many operators today are deploying APIs but these are mainly for internal technology capabilities. APIs can allow operators to reuse existing network and IT assets rather than having to build them from scratch. But these same APIs can also be the building blocks for vertical ecosystems and building a presence in sectors such as IoT. And some of the more advanced operators around the world are already leveraging the power of APIs to expand into new markets.
