A week in telecoms: Broadcom, Amdocs, Open-RAN, FTHH and security

Broadcom splashed out $61 billion in cash and stock on VM Ware to expand its enterprise software business and Amdocs is bringing on board new service and network orchestration expertise with its $188 million acquisition of MYCOM OSI.

Vodafone meanwhile is calling for a collaborative approach to building Open RAN systems in a new paper on Open RAN system integration. And according to a story in Telecom TV, Rakuten Symphony is looking to start an industry conversation around ‘pragmatic sustainability’, and has been producing solutions and methods to improve energy efficiency. Geoff Hollingworth, Rakuten Symphony CMO, explained to Telecom TV that: “What we are doing at Rakuten Mobile is building artificial intelligence and machine learning models that [assess] how much energy is needed in different parts of the network at different times of the day.”

The FTTH Council Europe reports steady growth in fiber build efforts. According to the report, “the total number of homes passed with Fiber to the Home (FTTH) and Fiber to the Building (FTTB) in the EU reached nearly 198.4 million homes in September 2021, compared to 176.3 million in September 2020.”

The Verizon Business 2022 Data Breach Investigations Report (2022 DBIR) has found that ransomware attacks increased by 13 percent year on year – a jump greater than the past 5 years combined.
