Issues of diversity are front and center in all companies today thanks to growing awareness worldwide about the devastating effects of systemic racism and inequality. Even before the recent protests, TM Forum members were exploring the need and potential for a program focusing on diversity and inclusion in the tech communications industry. TM Forum has since launched a major initiative to help the telecommunications industry improve diversity. This work is part of 'The Human Factor', one of the Forum’s six key areas of focus. The theme provides a safe space for industry leaders to explore diversity and inclusion through projects and workstreams to understand best practices and obtain practical guidance as a connected community. In addition to conducting a survey, we also interviewed survey respondents and executives from the member companies that are leading this effort. It is clear that a companywide approach to attracting, recruiting, retaining, retraining and developing the best talent must be coupled with initiatives to create an inclusive, innovative culture where diverse skills and viewpoints are combined for maximum impact on business results.
