Whether you love or hate the term ‘phablet’, there’s no denying these larger phones are catching on with mainstream consumers. Research firm IDC thinks that will drive big growth for handsets with with screens measuring between 5.5 and 7 inches, sharing its latest estimates for device sales on Wednesday. Over the next four years, IDC expects phablet shipments to grow at a 60 percent annual rate.
This year alone, the firm thinks phablet shipments will rise 209.6 percent from last year with 174.9 million big-screened phones shipping in 2014. Part of this year’s growth likely will get a boost from the introduction of a 5.5-inch Apple iPhone, widely expected to launch next week.
