A new book, Reference Architecture for the Telecommunications Industry, is a practical guide to applying TM Forum’s Frameworx solutions, written by two exceptionally well-qualified practitioners. It also underlines the potential benefits of using Frameworx, from massively reduced cost and risk, to great business agility.
The authors, Professor Dr. Christian Czarnecki and Christian Dietze have extensive experience in the telecoms industry, having been involved in more than 50 transformation projects with operators worldwide, as well as long track record of working with TM Forum. You can read more about the authors at the end of the article.
Both have frequently relied on TM Forum’s Frameworx in a range of transformation projects and they decided to share their valuable experience so others can benefit from it by writing this book.
Prof. Dr. Christian Czarnecki and Christian Dietze talked to Annie Turner from TM Forum about their book, the experiences behind it and its unique value to readers.
AT: How did you come up with the idea of writing the book?
The authors: The telecoms industry has changed tremendously during the last decades and we have experienced the need for telecommunications operators to transform their strategy, organization, processes, data, and applications. We have seen, in various projects, that such an endeavor requires a standardized approach – and this is exactly what we have developed with the reference architecture in our book.
AT: Who is this book for? Will it appeal to a business or technology-oriented readership?
The authors: Our book features a wealth of examples and illustrations for a broad readership. It offers a valuable resource for telecoms professionals, enterprise architects, project managers, researchers and students alike.
AT: How do you talk about TM Forum standards in your book and why?
The authors: We have been heavily involved in the further development of TM Forum standards – especially the Business Process Framework – and we have experienced the practical relevance of TM Forum’s Frameworx in more than 50 transformation projects. This is why the architecture solution for the telecom industry developed in our book is based on TM Forum standards.
AT: Can you give an example of a project you used Frameworx in?
The authors: One project had the objective of introducing a new Operations Support System (OSS) based on next generation networks (NGN). A complex architecture had to be developed that was used for the bidding process to select and implement standard software. A company-wide OSS was introduced that enables the decoupling of production and products. In this context, an overarching and detailed data model was developed that conforms to the reference data model [Information Framework – SID] developed by TM Forum. There are many other project examples in our book.
AT: What kinds of benefits did Frameworx help you to deliver? For example, faster completion of projects that saved money?
The authors: On the one hand, through Frameworx, we had the impression we were able to develop concepts in our projects much quicker and more thoroughly, in many instances. This certainly led to cost reductions during project execution. On the other hand, we have seen a strong value in that TM Forum’s Frameworx provides a common language and basis for telecom practicioners, project managers, consultants, vendors, and system integrations. Through TM Forum’s Frameworx – the de facto standard – this level of standardization is unique to the telecom industry. This level of standardization cannot be observed in any other industry.
AT: What do you hope your book will achieve?
The authors: The readers of our book will receive concrete guidance and examples of how reference solutions for the telecom industry – such as TM Forum Frameworx – can be used in a practical context. They will also gain the latest insights into their development and benefit from lessons learned in numerous international projects. We hope that our book will convey our experience from these projects and help telecom practitioners successfully achieve their transformation targets. The Reference Architecture for the Telecommunications Industry is available as hardback and eBook at Springer.com.
